In September 2024 Servas Germany invited members to a region which is still regarded as a secret tip: The Ruhr region is located in North Rhine-Westphalia in the west of Germany.
It’s about 60 km north-east of Cologne.
The Ruhr region used to be a steel and coal mining area but today you’ll find inviting parks, gardens and recreational areas where people love to go for walks or cycling.
Former industrial sites are now venues for art, culture and sports.
65 participants had come from Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Australia, Scotland and Israel.
The group visited:
● Mining Museum in Bochum
● Guided tour "Development of Coal Mining"
● Boat tour at lake Kemnade Ruhr reservoir
● Visited old town of Hattingen
